Meon Shore is situated on Southampton water. It is tidal but sheltered from groundswell by the Isle of Wight and so primarily a flat water/chop spot rather than a wave spot. In high winds you will get wind driven swell.
We do get some current during larger tides but this just moves you along the coastline rather than taking you out to sea.
The wind tends to funnel through this part of the coastline so there is often more wind at Meon Shore than other South Coast locations.
Being part of the Solent it can get choppy an hour either side of high tide and during this time is probably not suitable for beginners as you can get blown onto the sea wall around HillHead harbour.
At mid to low tides there is beach in front of the sea wall and it is shallow so there is no danger anymore and much more suitable for beginners.
The beach is stony and there are multiple sand bars along the coastline, so it is not uncommon to hit one of these bars if you do not know their locations, although at mid tide and above they are all suitably submerged and beyond foil depth. Just something to be aware of if you are someone who wants to keep their foil entirely scratch free – this is not easily done at this location.
Many thanks to Dave Brewer (rider in the photos) and Ashley Davis for writing the spot guide.
