SPOT GUIDE

Calshot Spit, Hampshire (UK), is an ideal location for wing foiling with a variety of sailing conditions from sheltered flat water to swell rolling down the Solent.  Excellent sheltered areas for beginners to learn the sport.

Check out the fantastic video of this spot at the link above ‘Watch Video’ to see the lagoons, flexibility on wind direction and varied backdrops that Calshot has to offer. YouTube video credit Joe Lawrence.

Winging from the Activity Centre is by annual club membership only.

Winging from the ‘car park’ between the beach huts is unregulated.

Getting There

By car: from the M27, follow the A326 towards Fawley. Keep an eye out for the brown tourist signs for Calshot Activities Centre.

An Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system is in operation at the centre. Simply drive in, park up and pay at one of the pay machines before leaving.

Membership

2023 Fees: Club membership costs £7.50 per year in addition to the Calshot Association Membership fee of £15.00 per year.  Insurance is required.

The Solent’s double high tide works well in the large lagoon to the NW (Southampton side) often resulting in 4 to 5 hours of very safe and sheltered water, as well as ‘flat water blasting’  with the best winds from the NE through N to SW, but when the tide is going out (ebbing), it has to do so in 30% to 50% the time it took to come in, so be prepared for this much stronger flow than when its coming in (flooding), especially around the Pier and the Castle areas of the site.

The Solent side is accessible within half an hour or less after the lagoon becomes too shallow, offering standing depth water over a huge area of sand and shingle, for again 4 or 5 hours – this side favours wind from the SW through South to NE and is also fantastic for the more experienced at high water as well, with the added benefit of the lovely backdrop of the Isle of Wight.

Other benefits include rigging area, car parking (often right next to the beach) and hot showers, toilets & changing facilities as well as cold water shower/kit wash on the beach outside 24-7 Boardsports.

Wind Directions

The wind directions for the beach & car park launches are:

  • NE – Cross shore from the left
  • SE – Onshore
  • SW – Cross shore from the right

Wind directions that work for the pond behind the spit:

  • NNW around to NE

If you’ve not been to Calshot before pop in and visit the team at 24-7 Boardsports & get their advice on where to wing foil.
